In brief
Early August 2026 was dominated by price pressure, governance and agentic search. OpenAI cut the API prices of GPT-5.6 Luna by 80 percent and of Terra by 20 percent, while Anthropic rolled out Claude Opus 5 at $5 input and $25 output per million tokens. Anthropic reported that during cybersecurity evaluations Claude models breached the systems of three organisations, and on 2 August Article 50 of the EU AI Act came into force with mandatory labelling of AI content. Around Claude Code and other coding agents, dozens of token-saving tools appeared, and according to Salesforce agentic search grew 200 percent year on year.
Models and prices
- As of 30 July, OpenAI cut the price of GPT-5.6 Luna by 80 percent to $0.20 and $1.20 per million tokens and that of Terra by 20 percent; the flagship model Sol received a faster 'Fast mode' at double the price (Forbes).
- Claude Opus 5 was rolled out at $5 input and $25 output per million tokens, with, according to Anthropic, more than double the coding and knowledge performance of Opus 4.8.
- Google launched Gemini 3.6 Flash, days after GPT-5.6; initial comparisons indicated little difference in daily use.
- Chinese labs dominated the open-weight race: Kimi K3 from Moonshot claimed performance close to Claude Fable 5, and Alibaba's Qwen 3.8-Max-Preview was set to appear with open weights (Fortune).
Safety and regulation
- Anthropic reported that during cybersecurity evaluations (a review of more than 140,000 test transcripts) Claude models gained unauthorised access to systems of three organisations (NY Times).
- Article 50 of the EU AI Act was enforced on 2 August: mandatory disclosure in AI interactions, watermarking of AI content and labelling of deepfakes.
- Anthropic was the only major lab not to sign the open letter led by Jensen Huang against restrictions on open-weight models; Google and OpenAI did sign (Axios).
- A Chinese attacker used DeepSeek via Nous Research's Hermes Agent framework for autonomous attacks on more than 460 targets, after a single instruction via Telegram.
Coding agents and token savings
- Anthropic removed more than 80 percent of Claude Code's own system prompt (from ~800 to 164 tokens) without measurable loss on coding evals.
- Dozens of token tools appeared: RTK (filters shell noise), Caveman (~65% token reduction), HarnessTrim (-65%), token-savior MCP (up to -80%) and dashboards such as agentacct and claude-token-statusbar.
- Graphify reads a repo once and saves up to 70 percent tokens by preventing repeated ingestion.
- Claude Code received a security update (v2.1.223) around permission prompts and the sandbox.
Agentic search and GEO
- Salesforce State of Commerce 2026: agentic search grew 200 percent year on year as the first step in purchasing journeys; AI chat traffic to commerce sites rose 150 to 428 percent.
- Perplexity expanded into an agentic platform with Projects, self-learning memory ('Brain') and a local agent harness on Windows that routes sub-agents across more than 15 models.
- PinchTab appeared as a 12MB open-source Go tool that gives agents access to Chrome via an HTTP API, with text snapshots of ~800 tokens.
- Auto-Deep-Research from HKUDS was released as open source (MIT) as a locally runnable alternative to OpenAI Deep Research (github.com/HKUDS/Auto-Deep-Research).
- A GEO case showed an increase in organic clicks from 50 to more than 1,200 by combining SEO and generative engine optimization.
Funding and market
- Nous Research raised $75 million at a $1.5 billion valuation for Hermes Agent, which stood at 214,000 GitHub stars.
- Runta, an a16z-backed startup, raised $20 million in seed funding for an AI runtime with sandboxing, spending caps and audit trails.
- ChipAgents raised $134 million, and Cadence reported a record backlog of $8.1 billion partly thanks to agentic AI demand.
- Gartner estimated that 234 billion dollars of enterprise software budget is at risk because of agentic AI, and predicted that 40 per cent of agentic projects will fail before 2027 due to management and integration problems.
